Wine review: Yosemite Road Chardonnay NV
The Wine Curmudgeon really, really wanted to like this wine, which is one of the two, new $4 private label wines from 7-Eleven. But, unfortunately, it tastes like $4 wine.
This means the Yosemite Road (purchased) doesn’t have enough varietal character — the green apple and pear flavors that chardonnay is supposed to have aren’t really there. And it wasn’t especially balanced, as if more acid had to be used to compensate for the fruit quality.
This, obviously, won’t bother everyone. The clerk at the 7-Eleven where I bought the Yosemite said he was selling quite a bit because it was so cheap. And, for those who like to keep a couple of bottle of the various ultra-cheap wines around the house because they are so cheap, the wine is probably OK.
The Yosemite had more off-tastes than some of the Trader Joe Two Buck Chucks I’ve tried, which are just thin and watery as opposed to off-putting. It didn’t seem as well done as Walmart’s $3 wine, but I haven’t tasted that one in almost two years. And I’ve had some $6 wines, like Barefoot, which aren’t appreciably better than any of these.
I only have one other question: Who will come up with a snazzy nickname for this wine, in the style of Two Buck Chuck?

I totally disagree. I was surprised at how much I liked the Yosemite Road Chardonnay! I would NEVER drink Barefoot again, it is ghastly! I think the Yosemite is light, not very acidic and goes very well with food. It is very easy to drink, smooth (almost!) and I will continue to buy it.
I’ve had 3-4 bottles of the cabernet sauvignon and it was uniformly good. Any Frenchman who tasted it would say that it is a good vin ordinaire and good with food or alone. It is light for a cabernet sauvignon. I wonder if it is 100% cab sauvignon. It seems more like a pinot noir than a cab, which is not to say anything bad about it but to note how light it is.
I totally disagree, I found this to be one of the best Chardonnay wines I have had, not too sweet. I have not been able to find a web site to contact the vineyards, I wanted to report the 7-11 where I purchased their wine. When I confronted them about the price, they were charging the full price of 4.99 instead of the sale price. After speaking with the manager, they just removed the signs that were still showing sale prices until the next day rather than allowing the sale. I feel this is an insult to both the distributor and the consumer. I wish I knew where to purchase this wine other than 7-11
If u find out were to get other then 7 11 cause I have none in texas I’d love to know I tried it and love the taste
Thanks for the note, Doris. This is a 5-year-old review, and I probably need to update it.
Not disappointed!!
Price not necessarily mean a great wine and cheap not a nasty one either.
It all depends on your taste and perspective!!
We loved it and we love the value
Well it smells rubbery and sour, like there’s something wrong with it, but we figured we’d give it a taste and maybe it would taste better than it smells. Nope! It tastes exactly like it smells and my girlfriend refuses to drink it. On the plus side it’s 12.5% alcohol, so it’ll definitely do the trick of getting you a inebriated. Will I buy it again? Probably not unless I’m living out of a box and looking for a cheap and quick fix.
