When I first developed an interest in wine I didn’t know where to start. I only knew that if I wanted to understand wine I needed to drink more wine. So I started where I think many people start and I searched for “good cheap wine” online. This is how I found your blog. I’m sure others end up here for similar reasons. Why not write more for that crowd? More educational items about wine. You teach a wine class at the college level, maybe some items form your classes. Maybe not a great idea for Google “hits” but quite useful none the less for readers. Just a thought.

Thanks for this, Robert. Much of of what you are talking about is already on the blog.. check out the wine terms category and cheap wine resources at the top of the page.

I found your blog after I read an article you wrote in Texas Journey magazine. I became interested in Texas wine. I hope you are not tired of writing about Texas wine, because I haven’t found anyone better. You seem to have the market cornered on this topic. But I haven’t seen a lot of articles on this topic lately.

I also noticed that you have an interest in cooking. I wouldn’t mind seeing a recipe now and then. Or some insight on how to pair wine with food. I normally drink wine when I am eating.

I like the food idea.. thank you. Maybe a wine and food pairing of the month?

With the imported wines you feature, could you please include name and addy of the importer? Makes it easier to locate them.

That’s a fine idea, and quite possible — assuming I remember to do it. Thank you.

I would like to see comments on wines that become heavily discounted and are bargains based on the price they are being offered. Also discussions of close-outs of older wines that are being offered at good prices.

This is a fine idea, with the only problem being that there is little consistency with discounted wines. What’s on sale in one part of the country may not be in another, and I have people from all the country (all over the world, in fact) reading the blog.

I would lie to see some blind tastings results. Always interesting.
Taste your favorites against each other. Cabs or Bordeaux Blanc
Take a line like Ch St Michelle and taste from bottom to top.

Another good idea. Let me ponder and see if I can make it work, given the logistics of blind tastings. If I’m going to taste the wines, i need to find someone else to set it up.

Granting the impossibility of doing so for readers all over the country, could you add suggestions on where to find, in Texas, wines you recommend? Also–thinking of your response to Tony’s suggestion–is there any way to help you to remember?

Availability, of course, is the one thing that drives everyone crazy. Even listing where I buy the wine in Texas wouldn’t help those of you in Texas all that much. First, I buy wine at a couple of places that are only in Dallas. Second, even when I buy something at Spec’s, which is in most of Texas, there is no guarantee that the wine is in another Spec’s in Texas (as a former Spec’s employee has explained to me). But I will try to start listing the importer for foreign wines.

Jeff, maybe more frequent comparisons of “old world” versus “new world” wines. Also more discussion of blend trend away from varietals and more manipulation of many wines. Lastly more helpful hints on ordering wine in restaurants without getting scalped.
    Thanks,
    Dan

I wish I could write more about how to order restaurant wine and not get ripped off. But these days, it’s almost impossible.
