Happy Holidays 2023

Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” has been a holiday tradition on the blog since the very first Christmas season (despite various efforts by Big Music to block legitimate fair use).

So what better way to end the tradition than with this version, from 2007 in Paris? It features  the Boss speaking French even worse than mine, the Big Man in impeccable form, and an audience that shows why rock n’ roll will never die. (Video courtesy of Joroba at YouTube).

The Wine Curmudgeon is off today for the holiday, but will return tomorrow with our usual features. New Year’s Eve wine suggestions will post Thursday; the 2024 Turner Cheap Wine of the Year will be announced on Jan. 11, with the 2024 Hall of Fame following on Jan. 12.

Happy Holidays from the Wine Curmudgeon.

Memorial Day 2023

The blog is off today for the Memorial Day holiday, but will return tomorrow with our usual features. Until then, a belated 90th happy birthday to Willie Nelson. It doesn’t get much better than this, “Seven Spanish Angels” with Ray Charles. (Video courtesy of  Willie Nelson via YouTube.)

Happy Holidays 2022

Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” is a holiday tradition on the blog. This version is from a 2002 holiday season tour — it was featured in seven shows, though it’s difficult tell which one this is from. And yes, that’s the Big Man (video courtesy of Slaughter Player at YouTube).

The Wine Curmudgeon is off today for the holiday, but will return tomorrow with our usual features. New Year’s Eve wine suggestions will post Thursday;  the 2023 Cheap Wine of the Year will be announced on Jan. 12, with the 2023 Hall of Fame following on Jan. 13.

Happy Holidays 2021

Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” is a holiday tradition on the blog. This performance comes from a 2016 benefit at Carnegie Hall — yes, Carnegie Hall (video courtesy of Front Porch Movement at YouTube). What better way to rock in the holiday?

The Wine Curmudgeon is off today, but will return on Monday with New Year’s sparkling wine suggestions. The 2022 Wine of the Year will be announced on Jan. 6, with the 2022 $10 Hall of Fame following on Jan. 7.

Memorial Day 2021

The blog is off today for the Memorial Day holiday, but will return tomorrow with our usual features. Until then, a performer that not enough people know about, Nanci Griffith. John Bratcher and I used “Lone Star State of Mind” during our Texas wine sessions at the State Fair of Texas, proving you can spread the gospel of wine anywhere — and especially when you have a great tune to go with it. Enjoy the holiday.
